Do You Have Time to Feel Like Shit?

4/28/2014

"I don't have time to do yoga (meditate, exercise, spend time with my loved ones, pet my cat, see the sunset, sleep 8 hours per night, eat right... fill in the blank with your STORY)."

So, then, you DO have time to feel like shit?

They Don't LOOK Like They DO Yoga

4/7/2014

Let's put this one out in the open.  Some people don't LOOK like they DO yoga.  Apparently they do yoga... I've even seen them do it, but they sure don't look like they DO yoga.

Do we all feel better now?  I don't.  I feel worse.  But, I've thought that darn thought - what it looks like to do yoga.  I've thought it a lot.  I've met studio owners, teachers, advance practitioners, even one of my favorite "guru-types" and thought - "huh - they don't look like they do yoga."

The Yes is the Biggest Obstacle: Yoga Love for Your Wrists

4/6/2014

I can have a bend towards being clumsy - hence the plate and 7 screws (snowboarding) in my right wrist and the scars on my left hand (barnacles).  In order to keep my yoga practice going with these - um - obstacles, I had to learn some tools and modifications.  I taught a workshop this weekend, "Yoga Love for Your Wrists," in which I shared all kinds of things I've learned and researched about yoga wrist love and care.  I've shared my whole notes/handout from the workshop at the end of this post.  I'm happy to help you go over these in person with a wrist-loving private  lesson.

To Process or Not to Process - is THAT the question?

"STOP processing - you people have got to stop processing!" - Baron Baptiste

What?  Why?  I hear people say "I'm processing this/that/him/her/etc." often, and until recently, it didn't bother me... but now, it actually concerns me when people say they are processing.

Why not "process?"  Isn't it part of growing?  Isn't it part of figuring this stuff out?  Isn't it good to process and think?  Don't throw the baby out with the processed bathwater.

Where EXACTLY is Your Edge?

3/4/2014

Picture
I just got back from Level 1 with Baron Baptiste in Hawaii.  Yes, yes, that sounds very glamorous. The reality is that I didn't see much of Hawaii and that instead I lived in (often soaking wet) yoga clothes, sharing a room with other yogis, practicing/growing (sometimes physically, sometimes emotionally) for 16 hours a day, running on 5 hours of sleep (without caffeine)... all inside of a big plastic yoga bubble (to keep the heat in).  While that may sound like an edge in and of itself - add into the mix that my husband got injured while I was gone (and he was also out of town) and had to have major surgery without my support... and, I got sick as the cherry on top.

I LOVE that crow pose is Bakasana in Sanskrit - Bakaw!  Bakaw!  (you know... like a crow.)

I used to HATE crow pose.  Think about it - it's named after a not-well-liked bird, it's not one of the "pretty" poses, and... well... okay, I hated it because I was bad at it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still not good at it, but I am better at it.  And now... I LOVE it!  I feel strong when I'm in crow (and side crow) and then there's the part about the BAKA(w)sana!
